The MOT test checks that your vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards as required by UK law, and your licensing authority guidelines.

Standard MOT Rules in the UK

You must get an MOT for your vehicle:

  • By the third anniversary of its registration

  • On the anniversary of its last MOT, if the vehicle is over three years old

However, Private Hire Vehicles (PHVs) often have different requirements, depending on the licensing authority the vehicle is registered with.

Please note: Otto covers up to two MOTs per year per customer free of charge. Any additional MOTs beyond this allowance must be paid for by the customer.

If an MOT is carried out outside of our approved garage network but still falls within the two covered MOTs, Otto will reimburse up to £28 upon proof of payment.

London PHV MOT Requirements (TfL)

If your PHV is registered with Transport for London (TfL), the following rules apply:

  • Two MOTs per year are required

  • No MOT is required if the vehicle is less than 12 months old

  • You must have an MOT completed within 14 days prior to your PHV licensing date, unless the vehicle is under 12 months old
